World Through my Eyes -Revisited
Release 15 August 2025
When a band has been consistently releasing successful albums since 2000, there are bound to be a few occasions for anniversaries over time. In 2020, the German art rockers RPWL celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album, “God Has Failed.” Although the anniversary tour fell victim to the pandemic, they filmed a cinematic, glossy live concert in a large film studio, bringing their reinterpreted first album into the living rooms of their audiences. Given the sheer number and high quality of their albums and their numerous chart successes, one could almost celebrate an anniversary annually these days, but RPWL are wise enough to only devote a second, intensive focus to the absolute highlights. This year is one such occasion: 20 years of ‚World Through My Eyes‘.
The year is 2003. After three albums, the quartet from Freising, Bavaria, near Munich, had written everything that had been brewing inside them for many years. Now they are faced with a daunting task, one that many artists know all too well during their creative process: they must completely reinvent themselves.
The interests of the two musical minds, Yogi Lang and Kalle Wallner, had shifted. While previously they had explored more personal and emotional themes in their music, their gaze now wandered farther afield in search of inspiration.
During this time, singer and keyboardist Yogi Lang, in particular, explored various philosophies and religions, particularly Far Eastern approaches and the multiple aspects of seeing and classifying oneself and the world. This flowed fully into the album’s lyrics. Ultimately, all the songs were connected by a common thread: a unique world, seen through the eyes of RPWL.
Musically, a phase of experimentation began. The advancing digitalization also led to entirely new possibilities and playing fields in musical instruments and recording technology.
For example, the band had typical Indian instruments and vocals recorded in a recording studio in New Delhi to give songs like ‚Sleep‘, ‚Start The Fire‘, and the title track ‚World Through My Eyes‘ a special and authentic timbre.
‚Roses‘ was and remains a special song, without which hardly any RPWL concert can end, and which became the most successful single in the band’s history. The exceptional singer Ray Wilson, who had recently left Genesis at the time, lent his extraordinary voice to the song. Their joint TV appearance on WDR’s ‚Rockpalast‘ at the Harmonie in Bonn is unforgettable.
Another highlight of ‘World Through My Eyes’ was the release on SACD. This “Super Audio CD” enabled a mix not only in stereo, but also in 5.1 surround sound on an additional high-quality layer. RPWL decided to create the entire production in surround sound. Now the bandwidth was no longer limited to just two stereo speakers, but the entire room around the listener could be used, catapulting the listener into the heart of the music. This deserves special attention, as in 2005, there were very few artists worldwide who had released on SACD, such as Peter Gabriel.
In the wake of the 20th anniversary, it made sense not only to rethink the mixes, but also to elevate surround sound to the most modern level: Dolby Atmos. The upcoming anniversary edition, ‘Revisited’, will therefore include a conventional CD and a Blu-ray audio version—both versions newly mixed and mastered. This will be accompanied by the original SACD mix from 2005. The ‘Revisited’ will also be released on double vinyl, also newly mixed and mastered.
Even after 20 years, ‘World Through My Eyes’ has lost none of its magic. An album full of joy, great songwriting, and timeless production. It’s safe to say that this album represents a milestone and a leap forward in RPWL’s creative development. An absolute musical and sonic delight! Now it’s time to celebrate, including at one of the many live shows this year.
